• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

Yes, it does. But that's not the question I asked.

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

Six countries, actually. Six out of... twenty? Depends on which you count, I suppose. And no, civil unions are for the most part not the same as marriage.

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

Not what I meant. Society rests on certain concepts; one of these is the concept of human rights, including the right to individual freedom. Violating that right "for the greater good" can swiftly lead to more questionable actions. I'm not trying to be melodramatic, but this sort of thing does...

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

Mostly my point was that making up contrived examples was pointless and could work both ways. My main argument against your position is that imprisoning an innocent man has effects beyond the immediate. As soon as you imprison an innocent person "for the greater good" it is an unfortunately...

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

Think of the big picture. The one person, locked up, not able to continue his work. Millions of people die from a disease he had been on the verge of curing. Let me ask my question, again: what if it were ten innocent men and one guilty? No matter how good you are, no matter how carefully you...

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

I changed the results to reflect that, but it'll still list you under the previous option.

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

I like to turn the statement around: is it better for one guilty person to go free than for ten innocent people to be convicted? I would imagine many more people agreeing with this than with the original, but in principle it is exactly the same. Where do we draw the line? There are so many...

It is better for ten guilty men to go free than for one innocent man to be wrongly convicted

I'm sure we've had this discussion before, but I want to try something a little different; notice the poll is also about capital punishment. I am very curious to see how opinion on these two matters correlates. Anyway, I am very strongly in favour of the title's statement and very strongly...
